Macy’s to close five units in coming weeks

-- Home Textiles Today, 1/6/2010 12:35:00 PM

Cincinnati -- Macy’s Inc. plans to permanently close five units in the coming weeks as part of the what the company described as an “ongoing annual process to selectively prune underperforming locations while also opening new ones to fill gaps in local markets.”

Final clearance sales at these stores will begin Jan. 10 and will run for approximately 60 days.

Following these five store closings, Macy’s will operate 849 stores – 809 Macy’s and 40 Bloomingdale’s.

The five sites scheduled to be closed are: Downtown Boise, Idaho;

Summit Place Mall, Waterford, Mich.; Northwest Plaza, St. Ann, Missouri; Downtown Missoula, Montana; and Burlington Center Mall, Burlington, NJ.

In 2009, the company opened five new Macy’s stores -- Gilbert, Ariz., Fresno and Visalia, Calif., Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Fairview, Texas – and reopened two stores in Houston that had been closed from damage by Hurricane Ike in 2008. It also opened a replacement store in Nampa, Idaho. This year, Macy’s expects to open new Bloomingdale’s stores in Santa Monica, Calif., and in Dubai, UAE – representing the retailer’s first international location.
